The Planetarium was built inside the People's Park, Dagon Township, Yangon, in 1987 as a monument to the friendship between Japan and Myanmar. In 2024, following the travel guidance of the Head of State, the Planetarium was upgraded to the Space Museum to showcase space technology and promote interest among young people.

The Myanmar Space Agency (MSA) of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the Yangon Region Government, and the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) took charge of upgrading the Planetarium into the Space Museum. The museum was then inaugurated by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairman of the State Administration Council.
